Ever heard the phrase ‘customer service is an attitude not a department’?

See, this is the thing. People make the mistake to assume that customer service is something for those who work at the front. You know, the public facing department – the ones who deal with the public.

But when you think about it, customer service isn’t just about your customers. It’s about more than that. It’s also about your attitude.

And this means your attitude to your product or service. As well as to your customers. And this attitude is so palpable, it will be felt by those around you – yes, your customers, clients, and stakeholders. So if your attitude is blasé, guess what? Your customers will feel that.

And all this? Well, all this feeds back into your brand. What will you be known for?

The modern day warrior

In her book, Fierce Conversations, Susan Scott states that ‘the conversation is the relationship’. She challenges us to have the courage to engage in those authentic, though sometimes challenging, conversations we most likely tend to avoid. Thereby enriching even the most challenging relationships. This is priceless in both a professional and personal arena.

The thing is, many of us know that such conversations salvage and/or maintain a relationship. Any relationship. It is in what we say. But it is also in what we do not say. In my humble opinion, when we choose to no longer say anything, it means the relationship is over. Perhaps it is about picking our battles.

When I first drafted this blog some weeks back, I meant for it to be a piece for one of my other blogsites. But this past month, I experienced a lesson that subconsciously I already knew I was aware of. So perhaps the experience was a test. Suffice to say, I passed with flying colors.

But it got me thinking. What does courage mean to you?

The basics

It’s been a while, I know, and I apologize for that. There is no excuse, but I have been busy.

I also know that I have committed to a blog a month at least. Not only to you, but to myself. Just to keep the learning going.

It wasn’t that I was struggling for an idea for the next blog; or what I wanted to share. It was that I had all these ideas, and then upon reflecting on them, realized they fell short. Or at least I thought. You see, I got so excited about sharing them, I wasn’t even sure anyone else would get as excited. So those ideas are shelved. For now.

In my line of work, I come across different styles of writing in various degrees.

Sometimes I am thrown pages of content and my job is to clean it up. Structure the mess into something that half resembles a cohesive piece of work.

Suffice to say, the day is never dull.

I recently had to review a couple of pieces that got me thinking, and this sparked an idea for a blog.

And I apologize if it seems like it took me forever to get here, but I’m getting to the point.
