Five basic principles of a true leader

In Communication, Development, Inspire, Leadership, Personal Branding, Philosophy, Positive Thinking, Team on November 9, 2015 at 10:53 pm

What makes a true leader? Indeed, what makes a leader?

Are some of us really born leaders?

But what is it that true leaders do that sets them apart from the crowd? Apart from the ability to demonstrate well executed activities, such as planning, motivating, organizing, and decision making, what are the human elements that complement such tasks?

If we had to narrow it down to five basic principles that any leader needs to take him/her from simply one who manages to one who inspires and leads, what would they be?

Let’s take a look.

Change readiness in a constantly dynamic world

In Change Management, Inspire, Leadership, Learning, Personal Branding, Philosophy, Positive Thinking on June 22, 2014 at 10:50 pm

When I was younger I believed that people don’t change. As an adult, I realize this is incorrect. People do change; we learn, we evolve, we grow.

In fact, change is the only constant. We’ve all heard it before. This is true. Look around you. Change is everywhere.

And change is good. If we don’t change, we’re stagnant. Change pushes our boundaries. Takes us out of our comfort zone. And inspires us.

The person you are today is not the person you were yesterday. I certainly am not. I needed to change to adapt to the constant shifts around me. We all do.

So instead of fighting change; it’s about embracing change.

The art of embracing change is therefore to be change ready.

Two words

In Communication, Creative, Development, Inspire on April 7, 2014 at 12:27 pm

I spotted a quote the other day which I thought I’d share.

“If you could write a note to your younger self, what would you say in only two words?”

So if you could, what would you say?

Let the creative create

In Creative, Inspire on October 27, 2013 at 11:25 am

Dieter F Uchtdorf once said, “The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul.”

The English word ‘creative’ comes from the Latin term creatus, which means to create, make or produce. The term itself is related to the other Latin term crescere, which means to arise or grow.

A creative is exactly that, a creator – someone who creates, makes or produces.

So it’s certainly not logical nor wise business sense to employ a creative, pay them thousands of dollars, to have them spend precious time, and your precious dollars, pushing paper or perform menial administrative tasks.

It’s not wise business sense. But it happens. A lot.

Word of the day: hope

In Communication, Copywriting, Creative, Grammar, Inspire, Language, Personal Branding, Word of the day, Writing on August 12, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Perhaps one of the most beautiful words in the English language. From hope stems all things, creativity, inspiration, passion, compassion, value, even love.

So this one is a favorite.

The future

In Copywriting, Creative, Inspire on July 4, 2013 at 6:45 am

I took this shot when I was boarding a plane en route to New York.

It’s from an ad campaign that HSBC ran.

The message is clear, and certainly not new, but spoke to me at that moment in time. You see, I was on the precipice of a shift in my own life.

It wasn’t so much the words, but the idea behind the words and the depth of it that made me literally stop in my tracks, whip out my trusted iPhone, and snap the shot.

I wanted to share it because it’s so simple, yet so true. And sometimes, we get so bogged down by the intricacies of daily life that we forget.

So let’s remind ourselves.

The future is full of opportunity.

Creative warriors unite

In Art, Communication, Creative, Design, Inspire, Learning on June 28, 2013 at 12:33 am

I’ve used that term before. The creative warrior. Why? Because being a creative, it can sometimes be a lonely world.

We’re the dreamers with our heads in the clouds. We’re the poets time forgot. We’re the dancers with music in our veins. We’re the producers for which life is a movie. We’re the visionaries no one gets. We’re the abstracts who see depth into everything. And let’s face it, until you are discovered, you’re just that other person who sees things differently from the rest.

But it’s the creatives who push boundaries, open avenues, trail pathways, and make you think.

And we make you feel.

So what drives us?

What ignites your spark?

In Creative, Inspire, Writing on June 14, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I’m always on the lookout for things that inspire me. And I’m always connecting with those who fuel that inspiration and creativity. Or at least, I try to.

The Internet and social media have certainly helped facilitate that. My day job predominantly involves writing for e-learning, which means I dedicate my hours to projects that I believe inspire and grow people. And this job is made possible via the Internet. It’s a cyclic process. So it would be highly ironic if I didn’t believe in its power.

I also believe everyone has a voice and a story to tell. You may not be able to write it out, but there are other creative ways to tell your story. Artists and creatives paint, sing, dance, sculpt, produce, and create; with one ultimate goal: to share. To be heard. And for some of us, it’s therapeutic. Cathartic.

The story behind the word of the day

In Advertizing, Branding, Communication, Copywriting, Creative, Design, Grammar, Inspire, Language, Word of the day, Writing on May 3, 2013 at 1:23 am

So I thought I’d write something about the whole exercise behind the ‘Word of the Day’ series.

For a few blogs now, I’ve merely taken a photo of a word (thank you, iPhone) and popped it up as a blog piece. Is this sheer laziness on my part? Have I run out of things to say? Or write about?

Au contraire!
