Design Thinking: The future of thinking

Did you know that HR organizations are incorporating Design Thinking into their approach to managing, supporting, and training people? Instead of building ‘programs’ and ‘processes’, they are studying people to aid in the development of interventions, apps, and tools to help make employees less stressed and more productive. This was as reported in Deloitte’s Human Capital Trends 2016.

According to the report, it was also stated that HR needs to upgrade its skills to include design thinking, people analytics, and behavioral economics.

Design Thinking is not a new concept. Giants such as Lego and Google have been practicing this for years. But why are we suddenly sitting up to join the club?

Because when the client or customer can literally take or leave at the touch of a button, loyalty has never been so coveted. And user experience has become gospel truth.

The adventure called life

So it’s 2014.

I’m not one to make new year resolutions. I figure if you want to do something positive to change your life, you should just do it; you don’t have to wait for the start of a new year to do so.

But each year, I have a theme. And this year, this word pretty much sums up 2014 for me.

I hope it’s an amazing year for you, too! Happy 2014, here’s to adventure, love, and travel!

For it is those very things that inspire creativity. And may you continue to be inspired this year!

Let the creative create

Dieter F Uchtdorf once said, “The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul.”

The English word ‘creative’ comes from the Latin term creatus, which means to create, make or produce. The term itself is related to the other Latin term crescere, which means to arise or grow.

A creative is exactly that, a creator – someone who creates, makes or produces.

So it’s certainly not logical nor wise business sense to employ a creative, pay them thousands of dollars, to have them spend precious time, and your precious dollars, pushing paper or perform menial administrative tasks.

It’s not wise business sense. But it happens. A lot.

Word of the day: awareness

Awareness is a powerful thing. To be self-aware is to know self through self-reflection. And through the eyes of others. How do we see ourselves? How do others see us? How do we want to be perceived? What is our footprint? And what is our presence?

Awareness is the first step of growth and learning. Only by being aware do we know what we know, what we don’t know, and what we need to learn.

Once we are self-aware, we can then be aware of others and those around us. It’s all about the world in you. Then you in the world. And what you do with that awareness, well, that’s entirely up to you.

Yes. Awareness is a powerful thing.

Word of the day: knowledge

Creative warriors unite

I’ve used that term before. The creative warrior. Why? Because being a creative, it can sometimes be a lonely world.

We’re the dreamers with our heads in the clouds. We’re the poets time forgot. We’re the dancers with music in our veins. We’re the producers for which life is a movie. We’re the visionaries no one gets. We’re the abstracts who see depth into everything. And let’s face it, until you are discovered, you’re just that other person who sees things differently from the rest.

But it’s the creatives who push boundaries, open avenues, trail pathways, and make you think.

And we make you feel.

So what drives us?

The Tinman

The urban dragon

I stumbled across this little gem while wandering through the city today. A creative outburst of color, shape, and form. Even freeform is a type of form.

I’m not sure who did it or when it was done, but I call this one ‘The Urban Dragon’.

There’s a ton of little bursts of creativity out there that can inspire you on a daily basis. All you have to do is seek. And you shall find.

Have you seen the new Amarok ad for Volkswagen?

“I think, therefore I Amarok.”

Snap! Talk about clever copy.

It marries two simple ideas. The play on the name. And a tag everyone can easily relate to.

Another great example of simple creativity and getting the point across to your target audience. And then some.
