Remember advertorials? When was the last time you saw one?

Are they simply ads camouflaged as opinion pieces or editorials? Or is there more there than meets the eye?

Perhaps they were a sophisticated way of presenting advertisement without blatantly shouting the brand name. But shout they did. Perhaps we just didn’t realize it.

So remember advertorials? When was the last time you saw one?

Well, you see one almost daily. In blogs, content marketing, pictorials, videos, et al, with clever and elusive product placement.

It’s about communicating with your consumers without selling. In which case, branding is so subtle, you didn’t even know you were being advertised to. Because you’re not.

Why? Because good content marketing doesn’t simply tell you to buy for the sake of. It generally informs you of the need, then educates you on how you can solve that need.

Word of the day: knowledge

In Branding, Communication, Copywriting, Creative, Grammar, Inspire, Language, Learning, Personal Branding, Word of the day, Writing on September 8, 2013 at 10:34 pm

They say, ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ and that is true power. Knowledge is power. As they say.

But sharing knowledge is even more powerful. It marks a true leader.

I think. Don’t you?

Word of the day: hope

In Communication, Copywriting, Creative, Grammar, Inspire, Language, Personal Branding, Word of the day, Writing on August 12, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Perhaps one of the most beautiful words in the English language. From hope stems all things, creativity, inspiration, passion, compassion, value, even love.

So this one is a favorite.

Setting the scene

In Creative, Design, Film, Scriptwriting, Theater, Writing on July 13, 2013 at 10:17 pm

I love the opening first scene of the movie The Adjustment Bureau. A side silhouette of Matt Damon standing in perfect synergy to the arched backdrop. The colors. The tone. The vibe. The look. The feel. Even his attire doesn’t disturb the solemness in the air.

He is alone. In semi-darkness. In deep contemplation. Surrounded by beautiful historical architecture. Already you’re wondering why. What is he doing? What happens next?

It sets the scene for the story. You automatically feel a sense that this is his story. A journey into contemplating his purpose. In semi-darkness. In varied levels of confusion.

What ignites your spark?

In Creative, Inspire, Writing on June 14, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I’m always on the lookout for things that inspire me. And I’m always connecting with those who fuel that inspiration and creativity. Or at least, I try to.

The Internet and social media have certainly helped facilitate that. My day job predominantly involves writing for e-learning, which means I dedicate my hours to projects that I believe inspire and grow people. And this job is made possible via the Internet. It’s a cyclic process. So it would be highly ironic if I didn’t believe in its power.

I also believe everyone has a voice and a story to tell. You may not be able to write it out, but there are other creative ways to tell your story. Artists and creatives paint, sing, dance, sculpt, produce, and create; with one ultimate goal: to share. To be heard. And for some of us, it’s therapeutic. Cathartic.

The basics

In Copywriting, Grammar, Inspire, Language, Punctuation, Spelling, Writing on June 8, 2013 at 12:47 pm

It’s been a while, I know, and I apologize for that. There is no excuse, but I have been busy.

I also know that I have committed to a blog a month at least. Not only to you, but to myself. Just to keep the learning going.

It wasn’t that I was struggling for an idea for the next blog; or what I wanted to share. It was that I had all these ideas, and then upon reflecting on them, realized they fell short. Or at least I thought. You see, I got so excited about sharing them, I wasn’t even sure anyone else would get as excited. So those ideas are shelved. For now.

In my line of work, I come across different styles of writing in various degrees.

Sometimes I am thrown pages of content and my job is to clean it up. Structure the mess into something that half resembles a cohesive piece of work.

Suffice to say, the day is never dull.

I recently had to review a couple of pieces that got me thinking, and this sparked an idea for a blog.

And I apologize if it seems like it took me forever to get here, but I’m getting to the point.

If you’re still reading, great. Let’s continue.

The story behind the word of the day

In Advertizing, Branding, Communication, Copywriting, Creative, Design, Grammar, Inspire, Language, Word of the day, Writing on May 3, 2013 at 1:23 am

So I thought I’d write something about the whole exercise behind the ‘Word of the Day’ series.

For a few blogs now, I’ve merely taken a photo of a word (thank you, iPhone) and popped it up as a blog piece. Is this sheer laziness on my part? Have I run out of things to say? Or write about?

Au contraire!
