What’s your hook?

Ever heard a song on the radio you can’t get out of your head? And against your better judgment, you find yourself humming its catchy melody or sometimes ridiculous lyrics all day? Sometimes even to your utter embarrassment?

That’s a hook.

The same concept applies to writing.

But how does one write a hook?

Well, you start with an introduction, build the suspense, bed it down, reward your reader with a climax, then take them home. And finish them off.

Did that just make you sit up and do a double take?

See what I did there?

Now you’re hooked.

Cheeky branding

Making my way down to New York City’s High Line, I came across this little gem of cheeky branding.

I had to stop for a shot.

I call this one ‘Three tarts on Ninth Avenue’.

Now, there’s a play on words!

The humble comma

Ever wondered what the difference one simple comma might make to a sentence? Can it alter the meaning?

A fellow colleague recently posed me with a challenge.

He asked: What are the two different meanings of these two sentences?

The greatest influences in my life are my sisters, Oprah Winfrey and Madonna.

The greatest influences in my life are my sisters, Oprah Winfrey, and Madonna.

Needless to say, I passed the test with flying colors. Unfortunately, I got no prize.

Cheeky advertizing

Saw this whilst walking The High Line in New York City. Caught my eye, had a laugh, thought it was cheeky advertizing.

And simply had to share!
